Chief Lewis T. Craig Sr.
Dedicated to Saving Lives and Property
Porter Fire Department was founded in November 1908. Until 1991, it was located at 303 Franklin Street. Today, the department is located (with the public works department) at 550 Beam Street. Porter has 27 volunteer firefighters and one paid firefighter. Our firefighters are lead into action by Fire Chief Lewis Craig, Sr. and Deputy Chief Glenn Zaideman. We respond to approximately 350 emergency calls a year in the town of Porter, Dune Acres and unincorporated Westchester Township. We cover a variety of situations, including emergency medical assistance, automobile accidents, water emergencies, and fires. Several thousand acres of the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore are located in or adjacent to Porter. Therefore, we have a close working relationship with National Park Service firefighters and maintain brush and wild-lands firefighting capabilities, as well.
Porter Fire Department currently operates two engines, one tanker, one rescue truck, one brush truck, one medical truck, a chiefs car and a dive truck.
